EXIT 430 02:10

about

Not many bands, jazz or otherwise, choose to record in a studio in front of a live audience. Drummer Mark Lockett explains the reasons - “First of all we wanted a good sound. That’s why we travelled to Auckland. We knew Olly Harmer at The Lab, and he knows jazz and how to record bands live. Second, we wanted to have the feeling of a live gig, the vibe and the interplay with the crowd”.
“We are really happy with the album and how it turned out” continues bass player Daniel Yeabsley - “I think there’s something for everyone, from cool kids to groovin’ grandmas”.
‘Exit 430’ is the title track and is named after the motorway exit the band took to get to the studio - “we had this great new tune that needed a name. Finally, after driving for 8 hours seeing exit 430 was a relief, and seemed like a fitting name”.
Ayrton Foote, the trio’s pianist explains how the band chose the repertoire to record – “Since 2022 we have had a weekly residency at the Cabletop Eatery in Kelburn, Wellington, where we encourage the audience to request their favourite tunes. The selection on the album comes from those requests”.
Some of the material will be familiar to the jazz listener such as Duke Ellington’s ‘Don’t get around much anymore’ and ‘I Got it bad and that ain’t good’. The trio play energetic swinging versions of Jobim’s ‘Girl from Ipanema’, Vincent Youmans’ ‘Tea For Two’ and the Frank Sinatra classic ‘Witchcraft’. Others from the selection are a little more obscure but equally intriguing; Kurt Weill’s ‘Speak Low’ and the Count Basie classic ‘Broadway’.
Throughout the performance the listener gets the feel of being at the live studio session. The trio feeds off the energy of the situation which is demonstrated in their expansive improvisations and interactive playing.
While this is their first release as a trio, drummer Mark Lockett has released seven albums under his own name. His latest release being ‘Swings and Roundabouts’ recorded in NY. Bassist Daniel Yeabsley can be heard on a plethora of albums by New Zealand musicians including Twinset, Fat Freddy’s Drop, The Troubles, Ben Wilcock and the Jelly Rolls, and the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra. Pianist Ayrton Foote makes his debut as a leader with the trio, demonstrating why he is one of the most in demand jazz pianists in Wellington.
The album will be released on Thick Records NZ and available on Vinyl from MarkLockett.co.nz It will also be available on all major streaming platforms.
